Public Wi-Fi at coffee shops, airports, hotels, and other public places makes it easy to stay connected while you are on the go. However, public networks may not offer the same protections as your home network. Cybercriminals may use fake networks, websites, or messages to try to steal personal information. Understanding these risks and taking a few simple precautions can help you stay safer while using public Wi-Fi.

Why Public Wi-Fi Networks are a Risk:

  • Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) Attacks: A criminal may try to place themselves between your device and the internet. This could expose information if a website or app is not properly protected.
  • Unsecured Connections: Public Wi-Fi may not provide the same protections as your home network. Although many websites and apps protect your information, criminals may still try to intercept your activity or direct you to fake websites. Avoid entering personal or financial information if a website displays a security warning.
  • Fake Wi-Fi Networks: Criminals may create networks with names that resemble those of a hotel, airport, or coffee shop. Ask an employee for the correct network name before connecting.
  • Harmful Links and Fake Messages: Do not click on any suspicious links or connect to any networks you are unsure about. Criminals may use fake messages, pop-ups, or websites to trick you into clicking on a harmful link or downloading unsafe software. Be cautious of unexpected messages and requests to download or update something. When in doubt, close the message and visit the company’s official website or app directly.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Avoid Accessing Sensitive Accounts: When possible, use your phone’s cellular data or personal hotspot for online banking, payment apps, healthcare accounts, and other sensitive activities. If you use public Wi‑Fi, confirm the correct network name, avoid suspicious links, and never ignore a security warning on your device.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Turn on two-factor authentication when it is available. It adds another security check, such as a code sent to your phone, and can help protect your account if someone learns your password. Never give an unexpected security code to another person.
  • Portable Wi-Fi Devices: If you travel often, a personal, password-protected hotspot can provide an alternative to public Wi-Fi. Be sure to use a strong password and keep the device’s security settings and software up to date.

What to Do If You Think Your Information Was Compromised:

  1. Disconnect from the public network immediately
  2. Switch to a secure network or mobile data
  3. Change your passwords (especially for sensitive accounts)
  4. Monitor your bank accounts for unusual activity
  5. Contact your financial institution promptly if you notice unauthorized transactions or believe your financial account information has been compromised

Public Wi-Fi is convenient, but not always safe. The key is to be aware of the risks and make smart choices on how you use public networks. Simple actions such as avoiding sensitive logins on public networks, verifying the correct Wi-Fi network before connecting, and using stronger security measures, can help protect you from cyberattacks.
